Our Story

In 1976, a local musician and father of seven, Tony Brophy, started a family band; Lovingly named "Sound of Gold," that band played music across the prairies for over 30 years before being joined by one of Tony's many musical grandchildren, musician and audiophile Ariana Brophy.

Ariana joined the band as all children of musicians do; She carried equipment, helped set up, loan in and out, and helped her dad check the sound quality from the audience. This simple joy, accompanied with singing harmonies from atop her dad's bass amp, prompted a life-long love of clear sound and melodic harmony.

Ensuing years in creative industries include involvement in: the Citadel Theatre's Young Acting Company (2019) (Edmonton, AB): MacEwan University's Theatre Arts Program: MacEwan University's Jazz and Contemporary Music Program (Composition Stream): nominations for Artist of the Year and Adult / Alternative Recording of the Year (Edmonton Music Awards, 2015 and 2016 respectively): two residencies at the National Centre for Folk Arts at Halsway Manor (Somerset, UK, 2018, 2019): and involvement in productions for The National Film Board of Canada, CBC, The BBC, Amazon Studios, Netflix, Prime Studios, and more (in varying roles) in Canada, Northern Ireland, and the United Kingdom (2009, 2016 thru 2021). In 2019, Ariana also founded TheyFolk, an online platform for gender minorities in music.

In 2021, Ariana founded Sound of Gold Studios in the pursuit of creating more equitable opportunities for women and gender-diverse people in the Screen Industries. Sound of Gold Studios will prioritise the hiring and training of people who are subject to systemic forms of oppression; This includes, but is not limited to people who are: women, trans, non-binary, intersex, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, First Nations, Métis, Inuit, Black, non-Black people of colour, disabled, neuro-divergent, single parents, and more.

Our mission is to revolutionise the film and screen industries by prioritising the safety and well-being of our team, collaborators, and talent, in addition to actively carving out sustainable pathways forwards.

Sound of Gold Studios believes in equity, intersectional inclusivity, and accessibility, and we have centred our hiring, training, and professional conduct around these important ideals. We also recognise that as humans, we are imperfect, and are continuing to learn and grow; If there's a way we can improve our website, services, or conduct, please let us know.
